Chapter Eight
They sat together with Wren on Saviorâs lap, pressed chest to chest. It had been two weeks of nothing but warmth, gentleness, and constant touching. It was as if Savior knew Wren needed all of it to erase the harshness and pain from his past.
The other shoe never dropped. It was amazing but true.
Wren wrapped his legs around him and clung. He didnât want the bubble of the moment to pop. He liked how willing Savior was to just sit there with him. And how, so far, his touch was gentle even though Wren could feel his hard length against him.
âDo you have family, little bird?â Savior was always rubbing his back. It made him want to curl up like a cat on Saviorâs lap and never leave.
The last person to rub his back had been his grandma when he was a little boy. âGrandma and Dad are dead. Car accident five years ago.â
Savior tightened his hold. âIâm sorry, baby.â
Wren didnât want to think about how alone he felt. And he didnât want to think about where heâd go after Savior stopped wanting to deal with Wrenâs problems anymore. It needed to be addressed, though. âI donât have anyone to call. I donât know where I can go.â
Wren moved away, tracking the lines on Saviorâs chest. He met Saviorâs gaze.
Savior sucked in a breath. He came to some sort of realization. âI only asked because they would be worried about you. I want you to stay with me, but only if you want to.â
Wren studied his gaze, trying to find the lie or deception. All he saw was open honesty and maybe concern.
The muscles in Saviorâs jaw jumped. For the first time since theyâd woken, he was the one who averted his gaze. âIâll help you get set up somewhere. If thatâs what you want.â
âI donât know.â Wren traced a tattoo of a skull with a red dragon surrounding it. The tail of the dragon wove its way inside the skull, coming out its open mouth as if the killing had been done and the dragon was leaving the sin behind.
âThatâs okay, Wren.â He might have said it was fine, but heâd also used Wrenâs name for the first time.
Wren scowled. âI donât believe you.â
Savior growled. His eyes were different. It was as if they couldnât choose what they wanted to be because they shifted between two different types. Wren didnât know that much about actual foxes and nothing about dragons beyond what heâd read in story books as a child, but Savior had said he could shift into a fox and a dragon, so he figured he went between those two beings. At first it had scared him a little. It hadnât taken him very long to trust it hadnât meant anything bad or violent. But he wasnât so sure about the growling. He stiffened, ready to scramble away if necessary.
All Savior did was say, âI havenât lied to you. Not one time.â
Wren moved away. He sat near the edge of the bed and hugged his knees.
